Here, you will find everything you need to know about trail running equipment for an excellent race.

In the first instance, we will explain how you should prepare successfully, taking into account the influence of the trail and the weather, as well as the safety procedures you should follow to avoid unnecessary risks.

Next, we present a checklist of essential equipment for a run, as well as other gear you should consider taking with you.

The clothes you choose when you run can have an impact on your performance? Learn how to get a better performance when practising sport through the use of Sportswear.

What is Trail Running?

"When I'm running, I don't have to talk to anyone and I don't have to listen to anyone. This is the part of my day that I can't do without" - Haruki Murakami

Trail running or "all terrain running" is an endurance sport similar to road running.

It is done on natural terrain that can vary in altitude and latitude - mountain, desert, forest or plain - rather than on paved, sealed or asphalt roads.

In addition to the challenges common to athletics, such as distance travelled, speed and control under heart rate, trail running adds the concern of navigating variable and uneven terrain (e.g.. mountains, rivers...).

How should you prepare for running?

For athletes who are taking their first steps in this sport, we always recommend investing in a good pair of sports compression socks.

FYKE sports socks are a comfortable garment that provides your feet all the protection and support during exercise. They contribute to the overall health of your feet, absorb moisture, provide cushioning, improve blood circulation and relieve muscle pain.

Whatever the sport or the exercise: wearing sports compression garments is always a necessity!

Although it is common to see athletes parading hybrid looks - between casual clothes and sports compression clothes - these may not be suitable for this type of modality, on account of the high degree of demand compared to "normal" running.

For this reason, FYKE works only with breathable fabrics and adaptable to the human body to ensure maximum comfort at any time. This fit will make a total difference on your body.

The influence of the trail and the climate on the selection of the ideal equipment

There are various types of trails that athletes can run through, being one of the reasons that makes this sport fun and challenging at the same time.

Among these, there are more technical and difficult trails to cross (e.g. rivers, tree roots, sand and sharp rocks) and more easily accessible trails (e.g. forests, roads, grass).

The cherry on top of the cake is when the weather conditions suddenly change and alter the state of the paths, leading athletes to change strategy and adapt to the new biome.

In any case, the synthetic composition of the FYKE fabrics that make up our equipment are of the best quality, taking into account their elastic and absorbent properties. It is crucial to choose the right size, however, so as not to restrict movement and blood circulation.

Don't take unnecessary risks

Trail running events are divided by ultra marathons in remote areas or adventure races - technical or non-technical. In the first scenario, the list of equipment should be longer to protect yourself in case of emergency.

For beginners, the trails where the non-technical races are held have more accessible and gentle tracks, while the more advanced ones are full of challenging paths that may require a lot of preparation.

Don't worry about the time. After all, the courses are usually uneven in some parts, which can slow down or speed up the pace in a period of time. Remember that trail running has little to do with running: the important thing is to get to the finish line!

Strive for safety

Plan your route in advance to avoid accidents. Trail running wouldn't be so challenging if it only consisted of running, as you wouldn't need to put your adaptation and endurance skills into practice.

During the race, observe the conditions of the trail ahead and proceed with caution. Watch out for rocks, fallen leaves and mud puddles!

Checklist: What to take in your backpack?

When the body does not have enough water to carry out its basic functions, it can lead to serious health consequences. Continued dehydration has a negative impact on the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive and renal systems.

Keeping your body hydrated throughout the race should be your main concern. That's why you should opt for a water bottle, like our Soft Flask, easy to fill, easy to carry and easy to hold during the race.

Food is important before, during and after a run. During exercise, our body habitually burns a combination of carbohydrates and fat to stay active in the process.

Carbohydrates are stored in the muscle cavities and soft tissues as fuel, which our body gets access to more easily - when we run out of this reserve, we run out of energy!

There is still fat which is stored in the muscle and adipose tissues, which the body needs time and energy to transform into food. To replenish lost energy levels, you must consume between 30 and 60 grams of carbohydrates per hour throughout your trail running race.

We recommend consuming gels, lozenges, sports drinks or snacks rich in carbohydrates. This way, you don't have to worry about reaching your goal successfully, however, manage a healthy diet for the best results.

Helmet with torch

If the race is scheduled early in the morning or late in the day, this is one of the trail running equipment you should take with you. Although these situations are somewhat exceptional, it doesn't hurt to leave a helmet at the bottom of your backpack.

Anyway, wearing a helmet in mountainous regions is mandatory, so you might as well attach a torch to give more visibility and get a good experience safely.

Safety blanket

A safety blanket is always a must-have in your backpack regardless of the race. It can protect you from the cold or heat in case you have to stop.

Moreover, it is an ultralight safety item that can be stored in your backpack alongside the rest of your equipment without any problem: "better safe than sorry".

Mobile phone

The efforts put into technological innovation have allowed these devices to house a set of applications that we can use at any time, such as maps, compass, torch, alert signal and among others.

However, some devices are not impervious to weather conditions, so they must be protected from damage. FYKE recommends using the Boost Running Belt waterproof, to hold your equipment and avoid mishaps.

Waterproof Jacket

Running a trail running event in the rain can prove to be quite a challenge. However, by purchasing a waterproof jacket - durable, lightweight and breathable - running in the rain feels more like child's play!

Our Waterproof Running Jacket offers 10/10 protection against rain and adverse weather conditions, without compromising mobility and the best performance on the pitch.

Although the trend is to wear it in the cooler autumn and winter months, a waterproof jacket is a good option at any time of year. However, just make sure that it fits the body structure for the best experience.

In case the article does not fit or is too loose, FYKE ensures that the process of exchange or return of their items takes place in a facilitated manner, in the shortest possible period of time.

Embark on the Trail Running Adventure

For many athletes, running is not just a sport - but an act of liberation of the soul. Thus, trail running was born: the fruit of love for running and enthusiasm for nature, to return man to his natural state.

Direct contact with nature certainly fills the spirit and releases the wildest emotions within us. However, this connection has been lost in current times, as the world is more digital and nature seems more distant.

After reading our guide, you should have understood the importance of careful preparation before a race. Trail running has little to do with 'normal' running, this is because the trails can vary from more technical to more accessible.

That said, the first step is choosing the right trail running gear for the environment and weather conditions. The Waterproof Running Jacket, for example, is a must-have for any occasion because of the extra protection in adverse weather conditions.

In any case, compression sports clothing is important for running in maximum safety and comfort. Our sportswear is tested by athletes looking for a boost in performance without restricting mobility and preventing injuries.
